Standby power has quietly become the hardest compliance date in the air fryer calendar. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/826 — which replaced the older (EC) No 1275/2008 framework and for the first time explicitly names air fryers, coffee makers, toasters, ovens and microwaves as covered household kitchen categories — already cut the off-mode and no-display standby cap from 1.0 W to 0.5 W on 9 May 2025, a 50% reduction. Phase II then tightens the same two states to 0.3 W, a further 40% cut. German, French, Italian and Dutch market surveillance authorities have named air fryers, coffee makers and multi-cookers as priority categories for ErP spot-checks in 2026, with penalties ranging from market withdrawal to fines of up to EUR 100,000 — and the liability lands on the importer placing the product on the EU market, not on the factory. Two operational details do most of the damage: automatic power management must switch the unit into a low-power state within 20 minutes of inactivity and be factory-enabled by default, and any Wi-Fi or touch-screen model must hold networked standby at or below 2.0 W. Both are hardware and firmware decisions. Alongside this, Regulation (EU) 2017/1369 completed its A–G label rescale on 1 July 2025 and EPREL database registration is now a listing requirement for Amazon and MediaMarkt, while the ESPR framework that entered into force on 18 July 2024 is adding power-density and repairability expectations — industry guidance puts a 3 L basket above roughly 450 W/L under pressure versus one at 350 W/L.
Reading the chart: the cap has already fallen 50% once and falls a further 40% at Phase II. A power-supply and display-driver design certified for the middle band cannot be software-patched into the red band.
(EU) 2023/826 does not apply a single number to the whole appliance. It defines separate states, and a specification sheet that only quotes "standby ≤ 0.5 W" is incomplete. Networked standby is the one that catches digital and dual-basket platforms: a Wi-Fi module or an always-on touch controller that never truly sleeps can sit near 2.0 W and still pass today, but it is the first subsystem a surveillance laboratory will look at once the off-mode number tightens.

An air fryer ordered today ships in 8–14 weeks and then sits in an EU warehouse for the following season. If its power-supply architecture and display driver were certified against the 0.5 W generation, closing the gap to 0.3 W is a hardware-level redesign plus EN 62301 retesting — measured in months, not weeks. Specify the 2027 limit into the purchase order now, and add a compliance-upgrade clause to any multi-year supply agreement so the cost of a future re-certification is allocated before it happens rather than after.
Customs and market surveillance now verify the underlying test data, not the paper. Request a numbered EN 62301 report for each SKU you import, the NANDO-listed laboratory registration, and the EPREL registration number before booking the container. A "CE certificate" issued in 2023 is increasingly worthless at the border — particularly for Wi-Fi and touch-screen models, where networked standby at 2.0 W is the first number a laboratory will pull.
For South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, 0.3 W is not yet law — but the running-cost story travels. A 1,500–1,725 W air fryer uses roughly 0.25–0.30 kWh per 15-minute cycle, about 4–5 US cents at the 2026 US average of roughly USD 0.16/kWh, and 6–8 times less than a 3,500–5,000 W full-size oven on the same small-batch task. A household cooking five times a week saves roughly USD 12–18 a year versus an oven. That is a shelf-talker, not a spec-sheet footnote — and it costs nothing extra to claim once the test report exists.
Two points are genuinely unsettled and should be treated as risk rather than resolved. Phase II application date: the Dutch government notice and two industry trackers give 1 January 2027, while two Chinese testing laboratories give 9 May 2027. With-display standby at Phase II: 0.5 W per one tracker versus 0.8 W per the Dutch notice. Our recommendation is to plan against the earlier date and the lower number — the engineering cost of hitting 0.3 W on 1 January is the same as hitting it in May, but the cost of missing it by four months is a stranded container.
The timing arithmetic is what should change a 2026 purchase order. Beyond the standby limits themselves, Regulation (EU) 2017/1369 completed its A–G label rescale on 1 July 2025 and EPREL database registration is now a listing requirement for Amazon and MediaMarkt, while the ESPR framework that entered into force on 18 July 2024 is adding power-density and repairability expectations — industry guidance puts a 3 L basket above roughly 450 W/L under pressure versus one at 350 W/L, with a published 7–10 year spare-part commitment rewarded in repairability scoring. For a dual-basket 8 L platform, the practical checklist is short: an auto-off Wi-Fi subsystem, a deep-idle timer on the touch controller, a documented spare-part price list, and a per-SKU EN 62301 report. None of these compress once the mould is cut.
