PFAS-Free Coatings Move From Marketing Claim to Sourcing Requirement for Air Fryer Importers | New Trend shared by EPRO

【行业动态】本文整理自 Regbase《State PFAS Bans 50-State Tracker》(2026 年 8 月更新)、PW Consulting《Global Airfryer Market 2026》涂层耐久性章节,以及 Beancount 零售商合规指南(2026-09-07)。原文链接:regbase.com/state-pfas-trackerpmarketresearch.com

Three signals converge on the same purchasing decision for 2026-2028 air fryer programs. First, regulation: PFAS restrictions on cookware are no longer a single-state curiosity. Minnesota has banned intentionally added PFAS in cookware since January 2025; Maine and Colorado followed on 1 January 2026, with Rhode Island and New Mexico scheduled for 1 January 2027 and a further cluster of reporting and labelling duties landing in 2027-2028. Eighteen US states have now enacted PFAS laws covering consumer products or food, and nearly 100 new PFAS bills were introduced across 17 states in the 2026 sessions on top of roughly 280 carried over from 2025. Critically, most statutes place the obligation on "any person who sells, offers for sale, or distributes" — meaning the importer and the retailer carry the liability, not only the factory. Second, durability: a 2025 laboratory evaluation cited by PW Consulting found several popular PTFE-based non-stick air fryer baskets showed measurable coating wear and micro-abrasion after 400 to 600 simulated cooking cycles. At one cooking session per day, that is 13 to 20 months — well inside the 4-6 year replacement cycle the category normally assumes, and the single most common source of after-sales complaints on basket-type units. Third, demand: the air fryer market is moving from first-time penetration to a premiumisation-driven replacement cycle, with digital models holding 59.8% of 2025 value and residential use 82.4%, so buyers are paying for coating systems that survive repeated cycles rather than for the lowest unit price.

US State PFAS Cookware Restrictions: The Compliance Wave, 2025-2028

US State PFAS Cookware Restrictions - Compliance Wave (2025-2028) Consolidated view; "ban" = prohibition on intentionally added PFAS. Sources: Regbase (Aug 2026), Beancount (Sep 2026) 2025 Minnesota - BAN Jan 2026 Maine - Colorado - BAN Sep 2026 MN reports due (MPCA) 2027-2028 RI - NM - NH - WA - NJ Source conflict, recorded as-is: Regbase lists Connecticut in 2028 and Vermont in Jul 2028; two retail trackers list both as 1 Jan 2026. Washington is reporting-only (first reports due 31 Jan 2027), not a ban. Confirm per destination state before shipping. Implication for importers: Liability sits with whoever "sells, offers for sale, or distributes" - the importer/retailer, not only the factory. Lock coating spec 10-20 months ahead: reformulation - lab report - cert update - spray-line/mould adjustment.

Coating Durability: The 400-600 Cycle Benchmark

A 2025 laboratory evaluation cited by PW Consulting tested popular PTFE-based non-stick air fryer baskets and found measurable coating wear and micro-abrasion after 400 to 600 simulated cooking cycles. Translating cycles into field time shows why this matters commercially: the gap between wear onset and the 4-6 year category replacement cycle is exactly where warranty cost and brand damage accumulate.

Months to First Measurable Coating Wear (PTFE basket) Lab benchmark: wear at 400 cycles, clear micro-abrasion at 600 cycles (Consumer Reports 2025, via PW Consulting) 0 20 40 60 80 months 72 mo - category replacement cycle (upper) 48 mo - category replacement cycle (lower) 13.1 19.7 1x / day (365 cycles/yr) coating wear appears in year 1-2 23.1 34.6 4x / week (208 cycles/yr) wear still precedes replacement cycle

What This Means for Importers and Distributors

1. Compliance is a commercial term, not a factory document
Most PFAS statutes bind anyone who sells or distributes, so the exposure lands on the importer and the retailer. Purchase contracts should shift PFAS-free warranties and test-report delivery onto the supplier with defined remedies.
2. Ask for "PFAS-free", never "PFOA-free"
PFOA-free does not mean PFAS-free - PTFE itself is a fluoropolymer. Require total-fluorine or intentional-addition declarations per SKU, and treat "ceramic-coated" as a claim that still needs a laboratory report behind it.
3. Coating durability is the cheapest warranty lever
On a 4L+4L dual-basket platform, upgrading the basket coating system costs far less per unit than absorbing returns and negative reviews triggered by flaking within the first 12-24 months. Specify the cycle-life test method in the PO, not just the coating name.
4. Emerging markets: differentiator today, requirement tomorrow
South Asia, the Middle East and Africa have no PFAS cookware bans in force, so PFAS-free baskets are a premium selling point rather than a licence to sell. But because these are high-frequency-use markets, the 400-600 cycle benchmark is exactly where product reputation is won or lost.

EPRO Perspective

For OEM/ODM programmes, we recommend locking the coating specification at the same time as the mould kick-off - not at the pre-shipment stage. The workable sequence is: confirm destination-state scope, select the PFAS-free coating system, run cycle-life and total-fluorine testing, update CE/CB/UL files, then adjust the spray line and basket tooling. On a 4L+4L dual-basket 220-240V / 1800W platform this is a manageable change when planned early, and it protects both the importer's compliance position and the distributor's review scores.
