India's 2026 Quality Control Order (QCO) for Electrical Appliances came into force on 1 October 2026, replacing the 2025 order and sharply widening mandatory compliance. Under the QCO, more than 90 categories of household, commercial and industrial electrical appliances must carry BIS certification and the ISI mark before they can be sold or imported into India. The order is aligned with IS 302 (Part 1): 2024, which itself tracks IEC 60335-1:2020. Kitchen and food-processing equipment is explicitly inside the scope — ovens, stoves, fryers, steamers and coffee machines are all listed, which means air fryers fall squarely within the mandate.

For foreign manufacturers the path is the FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme): BIS officials travel to inspect the factory in China, then samples are sealed and tested at Indian laboratories. The process typically runs 3–6 months, and specialists advise starting 6–9 months ahead to avoid supply-chain disruption. Non-compliance is not a minor paperwork gap — it means import bans, product seizure at the port, and fines under the BIS Act. Strategically, New Delhi frames the QCO as consumer-safety and "Make in India" industrial policy, but for exporters it also functions as a technical barrier that selectively raises the entry cost of imports. The flip side is an opening: compliance becomes a gatekeeper and a competitive moat. ISI-marked products signal quality and trust, low-quality imports get filtered out, and certification-ready suppliers win the reorder business.

EPRO Perspective: As a manufacturer & exporter (工贸一体, one team from mold to shipment), EPRO notes that India is one of its core markets, and BIS (FMCS) is exactly the kind of compliance gate that separates suppliers who can quote a certification-included lead time from those who surprise the buyer at the port. EPRO already holds CE / UKCA / ETL / CB approvals and is building BIS into its dual-zone air-fryer OEM / ODM programs, so importers receive a certification-ready unit rather than a customs gamble. With 500,000 units-per-month capacity across 8 lines, EPRO can run BIS sample submission and production ramp-up in parallel — the same integrated advantage that lets India-bound orders hit their delivery windows.
