Measured vs Marketed: Air Fryer Energy Savings Put at 53%-69% in Which? Lab Test | New Trend shared by EPRO

Energy efficiency has quietly become the least-verified claim on the air fryer spec sheet, and the newest independent data shows why that is now a commercial risk rather than a marketing talking point. In its June 2026 laboratory comparison, the UK consumer organisation Which? metered four identical meals cooked in a Morphy Richards air fryer and a Bosch Serie 2 built-in electric oven, preheat included.

1. The measured numbers: 0.22–0.54 kWh per air fryer meal

Across all four dishes the air fryer used 53% to 69% less energy and finished 29% to 41% faster. The pattern is extremely consistent, and it is driven by physics rather than branding: an air fryer heats a few litres of air instead of 60–70, so it reaches temperature in a couple of minutes and wastes less heat around the food.

2. The marketed numbers: 43%-80%, and no kWh anywhere

Here is the problem. A full read of all 50 bestselling air fryer listings on Amazon UK on 10 September 2026 found that 19 print an energy-saving claim, spanning 43% to 80%. Not one of them publishes the kWh behind it. Eight of those claims were tested on sausages, three on frozen fries, and eight name no test food at all.

The measured band sits inside the claimed band. That is the uncomfortable finding: the marketing percentages are not necessarily wrong - they are simply impossible to check. And where an independent figure does exist, it is often narrower than the marketing one. Energy Saving Trust puts a 600 g chicken breast at 14p in an air fryer against 20p in an electric oven, a 30% saving, roughly half the Which? figure for a whole chicken, because the reference food and the appliance size differ.

Source conflict - annual running cost, five published estimates

Published annual costs disagree sharply because each uses a different assumed wattage, cycle length and electricity rate.
· MoneySuperMarket: air fryer 800-2,000 W, ~15p per use - GBP 54.75/yr at daily use; oven 2,200-5,000 W, ~21p - GBP 76.65/yr.
· Rightmove: air fryer GBP 0.68 per cooking cycle (about GBP 250/yr); electric oven GBP 1.10 per cycle (about GBP 400/yr).
· Which?: roast chicken once a week for a year - around GBP 8 saved.
· Home Energy Quotes: five oven meals a week swapped - around GBP 47/yr.
· Uswitch: compact air fryer 0.8-2.0 kWh/h, large air fryer 1.8-2.8 kWh/h, electric oven 2-5 kWh/h, on 200 cooking hours a year.
EPRO read: do not quote an annual figure to a buyer. Quote kWh per named dish at a named portion - it is the only unit every source can be converted into.

3. Why this matters commercially for importers and distributors

1. Europe is treating efficiency as an evidenced spec, not a claim

Market surveillance in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands is prioritising air fryers and small kitchen appliances in 2026. Non-compliant products face market withdrawal and penalties reported up to EUR 100,000 - and the cost lands on the importer, not the factory. Standby and off-mode loss is already capped at 0.5 W under Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/826, tightening to 0.3 W on 1 January 2027; a hardware-level change, not a firmware patch.

2. Check the scope before you print an energy label

Oven-style air fryers sit in a grey zone. Regulation (EU) No 66/2014 (ecodesign) and No 65/2014 (energy labelling) cover domestic ovens but explicitly exclude small ovens, portable ovens, microwave-heating appliances and grills. A compact countertop air fryer oven may therefore be out of scope - printing an A-G label that is not required, or not permitted, is its own exposure. Ask the supplier which rule applies, which test method was used and which configuration was assessed.

3. Power density (W per litre) is the metric regulators are converging on

Under the ESPR framework now being applied from 2026, efficiency for electric cooking appliances is discussed as watts per litre of usable basket volume. Indicative guidance suggests a 3 L unit above roughly 450 W/L is harder to justify than one at 350 W/L. Small baskets with high wattage are the easiest targets for a cap - worth modelling before the next tool opening.

4. The B2B ask: put kWh-per-meal into the RFQ

360iResearch's September 2026 study makes the same point from the demand side: brands that pair performance claims with transparent energy use, dishwasher-safe components and clearly specified coatings are better placed to reduce returns and win repeat purchases. Practically, that means asking your supplier for a metered kWh figure on two or three named reference dishes, the test food and portion, and the lab's accreditation - then printing the number instead of the percentage.

4. What to actually tell the buyer

The honest sell is not "saves 80%". It is this: for one or two portions, an air fryer uses roughly a third to a half of the energy of a built-in electric oven and cooks 29-41% faster, on metered independent data. The savings are real, they are just portion-bound. Which? found the advantage halves the moment two batches are needed, and disappears at three - a full oven feeding four works out at about 13p of electricity per person, the same as a single air fryer batch. Batch size, not wattage, is the variable that decides the answer, which is exactly why capacity and basket layout belong in the same conversation as efficiency.

For a distributor building a 2027 programme, three specification decisions follow directly. First, lock the standby design now - 0.3 W from January 2027 is a hardware decision made today, not a firmware update later. Second, size the basket to the household you are selling into: a 4 L + 4 L dual-basket configuration lets a family finish a main and a side together, which is the only way the per-meal energy advantage survives at family scale. Third, get the evidence file before the PO, not after: measured standby power per EN 50564 or the applicable test procedure, the lab's registration, the exact model numbers covered, and EPREL registration where a label genuinely applies.

Energy efficiency stopped being a soft marketing line the moment regulators started metering it. The brands and importers who publish the kWh will be the ones still on the shelf when everybody else is explaining the percentage.
